Open source

Source code (GPL)

The part of NoviFS that reads and writes NTFS is built on open-source software, and its source code is yours.

Last updated 1 November 2026

What’s open source

NoviFS has two parts. The file-system extension does the actual reading and writing. It’s built on NTFS-3G, the open-source NTFS engine, and is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or later. The NoviFS app (the window, setup, menu bar and licensing) is separate, proprietary software.

Download the source

Every release comes with a source package for its file-system extension: the extension’s code, NTFS-3G, the build project and the GPL license text, with instructions to build it.

Version 1.0.0: the source package is published here together with the first release.

Customers can also download it from My Account, next to the app.

Written offer

For at least three years after we distribute a version of NoviFS, anyone can ask us for the complete corresponding source code of its file-system extension by emailing info@novifs.com. We’ll send it for no more than the cost of providing it.

Thanks

NoviFS stands on the work of the NTFS-3G authors and contributors (Tuxera and the open-source community) and the authors of the original FSKit NTFS extension it grew from. Thank you.
